Traful River

One of Patagonia Outfitters’ most elegant options is paying a visit to Estancia Arroyo Verde, located near San Carlos de Bariloche, where the Traful river runs through a breathtaking valley of incredible wind-and-water sculpted rock spires, minarets, and chimneys, breath-taking views of the crystal clear Lake Traful with the backdrop of the white-capped Andes and lush forests.

Here you’ll be hosted by the charming Larivière family in their exquisite estancia home and enjoy their fine cuisine and wines. “Arroyo Verde” is perhaps the most beautiful estancia in southern Argentina and one of those very unique places in the world. The countryside is absolutely captivating; the ranch embedded in an enchanted valley.
The Traful is not a long river in miles but it has a lake on each end. That makes for the possibility of catching big fish anytime, this being its strongest feature. The Traful river receives runs of big brown and rainbow trout as well as of landlocked Atlantic salmon. And while the salmon are most prevalent early and late in the season, the Traful also has fine fishing for big trout all season with evening hatches that can provide dry-fly fishing. That’s the way the Traful is, a river of surprises, a river with character, a beautiful piece of the planet running through unusual rock formations. It has the magical feeling of “the river of the spirits”.
Arroyo Verde is a sophisticated and classy fishing lodge with four double rooms each with their private bathroom, comfortably and elegantly furnished sitting and dining rooms. There is also the guest cabin, which is perched on a cliff with a simply unimaginable view of Lake Traful.
Arroyo Verde is also ideal for guests traveling with non-fishing spouses or the more casual fisher-person. Horseback rides are always possible and can easily be arranged for short rides or a day of riding in this breathtaking scenery.
The Traful is a very special river, it holds all different kinds of “salmonids”: rainbow, brown and brook trout, land-locked salmon and occasionally perch, giving anglers the full fishing experience. At the beginning of the season, mid November, the river runs high and fast, becoming lower in December but usually with fast water till the beginning or middle of January (depending on weather conditions, especially the previous winter snows in the mountains), the river then runs slow till the first rains of autumn. Its width varies from 60 to 90 feet (20 to 30 meters).

Accommodations

Jorge Trucco is one of the true Malleo fly-fishing pioneers as he was probably the very first one to actually view the real potential the Malleo had for the international angler. Jorge spent many years of his life scouting, fishing and guiding in the Malleo and was the real driving force that finally turned the Malleo into a total “catch and release” river by law in 1985. The six bedrooms all en-suite, the bathrooms are bright and like the bedrooms with their distinctive decoration create a homely environment. All the rooms are suitable for single, twin or double occupation.
